The 1970s were colorful, loud, and full of contradictions. The rebellious flower-power movement of the 1960s had evolved into a consumer-driven subculture. “Pril flowers” on kitchen tiles, bold patterns, and strong shades of orange, ochre, brown, and green defined what was perhaps the most flamboyant decade of the 20th century.

Technological Progress and International Steps

From the very beginning of the decade, IBENA set its sights on the future. With a modern Siemens mainframe computer, the company began implementing large-scale electronic data processing—a quantum leap that accelerated processes and sharpened its focus on the coming digital age.

A new chapter also opened in sales: in 1970, the American trading company Fisher-Cohen & Co. from Newark, New Jersey, took over the distribution of IBENA products in the United States.

Crisis as an Opportunity

In 1971, another devastating fire struck the company’s site on Industriestraße in Bocholt. Yet rather than suffering a setback, IBENA used the disaster as a chance for renewal. The relocation of the neighboring paint and lacquer factory Rickert & Co. to the outskirts of the city allowed the IBENA premises to expand significantly. New space was created for sewing and finishing operations.

Oil Crisis and Recession

The global political situation intensified in the autumn of 1973. The Yom Kippur War led to an oil embargo by Arab states, triggering a worldwide energy crisis. Rising prices, driving bans, and economic slowdowns shaped everyday life in Germany as well. For the textile industry, this meant recession—yet IBENA stayed the course.

Anniversary and Expansion

The year 1976 became a special milestone: the company celebrated its 150th anniversary and officially changed its name to IBENA Textilwerke Beckmann GmbH & Co. In this context, the trading company Friedrich Hocks was fully acquired.
When Fisher-Cohen soon after filed for bankruptcy, IBENA responded swiftly. Josef Albert Beckmann founded IBENA Inc. in the United States to rescue unpaid inventory and maintain the company’s presence in North America—a bold and strategically wise entrepreneurial decision.

Technological Change and Globalization

With the acquisition of 60 modern Sulzer projectile weaving machines, the era of traditional shuttle looms came to an end. This technological shift was a clear commitment to greater efficiency, productivity, and modernization.

By the end of the decade, the company made its definitive leap across the Atlantic: in 1979, IBENA opened a facility for confection and finishing in Spartanburg, South Carolina. IBENA was no longer merely internationally active—it now operated its own production site in the United States for the first time, a step that would firmly establish the brand on a global scale.
