The 1950s were marked by new beginnings and confidence in the future. In design, the Atomic Age—part of Mid-Century Modern—set new standards: dynamic shapes, vibrant colors, and futuristic ideas reflected a society that, after years of scarcity, looked ahead with optimism.
For the Beckmann companies as well, the postwar years represented a phase of determined and visionary renewal.
H. Beckmann Söhne: Reconstruction and a Collection for a New Home
From 1950 onward, true rebuilding began at H. Beckmann Söhne. New Jacquard machines and a complete preparatory system were acquired. The product range captured the spirit of the time: Jacquard blankets, flannelette bed linens, tablecloths, and decorative fabrics responded to the growing desire for coziness and comfort in postwar Germany. After deprivation and hardship, the home once again became a place of pride and personal expression.
On April 8, 1951, Ludwig Beckmann Senior passed away, having shaped a significant chapter of the family and company history.
J. Beckmann Nachfolger: Anniversary, Security, and New Directions
J. Beckmann Nachfolger was also in motion. By the early 1950s, storage facilities were fully usable again, and production was broad-based: Calmuc, molton, pajama fabrics, and Genoa corduroy defined the assortment. In 1951, the company celebrated its 125th anniversary at Beckmannplatz. The jubilee was accompanied by an important social milestone: the introduction of a company pension plan.
One year later, a legal restructuring followed: the limited partnership was retroactively converted into a sole proprietorship.
In 1957, Josef Albert Beckmann joined the firm and assumed responsibility in day-to-day operations, initiating the next generational transition. The years 1958 and 1959 were defined by technical modernization: with four-meter-wide shuttleless looms, J. Beckmann Nachfolger set new benchmarks in production.
Expansion and Bold Decisions
In 1959, the company significantly expanded its scope: the purchase of the Inlett weaving mill Kayser, Liebau & Lotze made the firm a complete provider “around the bed.” The company also demonstrated courage through strategic shifts. Corduroy production was discontinued—against the wishes of senior director Josef Beckmann. Instead, the focus moved to raised fabrics such as flannelette bed linens and sleeping blankets.
It was especially for these products that the brand name IBENA was introduced as a hallmark of quality. At the same time, production of the first technical textiles for filter and decatizing machines began—an early look toward future-oriented markets.
A New Name, New Materials
During the 1950s, the traditional company name was expanded to include the IBENA brand. “J. Beckmann Nachfolger” thus became “IBENA Textilwerke J. Beckmann Nachfolger.”
The company also proved innovative in its use of new materials such as Cuprama from Bayer and later acrylic fibers—opening a new path toward future-ready textile production.
