The Future Begins

The 1880s were an era of contrasts. While Historicism celebrated a return to the magnificent language of form through Neo-Baroque—with sweeping ornamentation, floral details, and lavish decoration—technological and social progress was simultaneously gaining momentum.

Nature and Progress

The renewed focus on organic, nature-inspired forms found expression, for example, in the architectural style of Antoni Gaudí. When he assumed leadership of the monumental Sagrada Família project in 1883, he translated natural growth patterns, curves, and plays of light into stone, overturning conventional rules. From this spirit of experimentation later emerged Catalan Modernism—a style that Gaudí shaped decisively and made world-famous.

At the same time, technology and science were setting new standards. In 1886, Carl Benz received the patent for his Motorwagen. That same year, the Statue of Liberty was unveiled in New York, and in 1889 the Eiffel Tower opened in Paris. Both monuments became powerful symbols of engineering achievement. Electrification advanced, light bulbs illuminated the nights, photography became more practical with the invention of roll film, and Heinrich Hertz proved the existence of electromagnetic waves.

It was a decade of discoveries and flashes of genius—imbued with the feeling that the future had already begun.

A Social Commitment

In this era, Albert Beckmann embodied a lived sense of social responsibility. Amid sweeping economic and societal change, he placed emphasis on charity and support for workers. In 1886, he made this commitment visible by donating a plot of land to the Catholic workers’ association for the construction of its clubhouse—a strong gesture that placed care and community at the center.

Family Conflict and New Beginnings

However, the 1880s were not defined solely by progress and goodwill for the Beckmanns. Within the family, a dispute over direction arose. Heinrich Beckmann wished to bring his sons Albert and Ludwig into the company’s leadership, but his brother Albert opposed the idea. Just one year later, Heinrich’s sons Albert and Ludwig founded the firm “Heinrich Beckmann Söhne”—a step into independence that once again firmly anchored the Beckmann name in the rising textile economy.

Politics in Upheaval

The year 1886 also marked a dramatic turning point with the mysterious death of King Ludwig II in Lake Starnberg—an event that deeply unsettled the public. Politically, too, the coordinates were shifting. The Year of the Three Emperors in 1888 brought Wilhelm II to the throne and with him a new era—one that would be defined by ambition, uncertainty, and a drive for national greatness.
